The Salinas Tree People have several focus-areas to address tree canopy improvement, as our community is facing a tree equity crisis that is too large to address in a single year. The Salinas Tree People will support the city's 40-year urban forestry goals by supplying trees to interested parties, participating in restoration projects, and providing education on proper planting and care to promote long-term tree health. The city of Salinas developed a modern urban forestry plan that lays out the strategy for achieving 25% canopy cover by 2064 by planting 1500 trees annually; however, the current rate of tree planting by the city is not sufficient to address the severe canopy deficit.
The City of Salinas's "Adopt-A-Tree" Program is currently not funded and has a three-year long wait list. If you would like a tree to be planted on your property in the public right of way zone (along the parking easement), follow the link below to sign up for their program. We encourage you to sign up to urge the City of Salinas to fund this program and get it off the ground.
The Salinas Tree People are securing grant funding, working with community partners, and using donations to provide trees free of charge for property owners. Our volunteers are learning about city ordinances, science-based tree management, and attending workshops in order to properly assist in planting trees. We also provide resources to homeowners to choose the right tree and learn about proper tree care.
